The Roles We Play

The Wellness Edge with Sandi Edghill (Ep 2)
In this episode, I explore an important question: Who are you beyond the roles you play?
I reflect on how easily we define ourselves by the titles and responsibilities we carry. Mother, wife, daughter, professional, entrepreneur, caregiver, problem solver. These roles matter, and many of them may be among the greatest honors of our lives. But they are not the whole of who we are.
I share why knowing yourself beyond your roles is an important part of your well-being. Roles change. Children grow up. Careers end. Relationships shift. Businesses evolve. Life moves us into new seasons. And when our identity has been built primarily around what we do for others, those changes can leave us asking, “If I am not that anymore, who am I?”
In this episode, I talk about:
• Why we often confuse what we do with who we are
• How changing roles can affect our sense of identity
• Recognizing the character, values, and qualities that exist beyond our titles
• Why knowing yourself is an important part of work-life wellness
Your Edge Work for the Week
Take some quiet time this week and write this question at the top of a page:
Who am I when I am not answering to a title or taking care of my responsibilities?
Then answer it without using a single role or title.
Do not write mother, wife, daughter, executive, entrepreneur, or caregiver. Instead, think about your character. What qualities are true about you? What matters deeply to you? What brings you joy? What makes you feel alive? What do you believe? What are you curious about?
Then ask yourself:
What does the woman I was know about me that I may have forgotten, and what do I know about myself now that she could not have known then?
Your roles may describe meaningful parts of your life, but they do not get to define you. Roles change. Seasons change. Life changes. Underneath all of it, there is still a woman with character, gifts, values, desires, curiosity, and purpose. A woman who is still becoming.
